And they know that players want to see recognisable imitations of popular real-world cars, too - that's the whole reason they keep on adding them. At least some of the team are clearly car guys - for example, I don't know if David Stingl still does work for R*, but he's very much an enthusiast, and I know some of his colleagues are as well (like the one guy who drives a lovingly-maintained R32 Skyline!). It always amuses me when a R* puts out a new car, and it's clear that the designers lavished a lot of care and attention on blending real-world cars together (in most cases, anyway.
To be honest, like with GTA as a whole, I really wouldn't mind an alternative to GTA, where there's either proper licensed vehicles and the like (RIP your budget, plucky dev studio.), or at the very least, things aren't constrained by the need to inject an element of caricature into everything.
